How I Discovered I Was Protestant - Soren Johnson
As a young Evangelical, Soren Johnson didn't think much about the Reformation, until a question from an Orthodox priest during a mission trip to Russia got him to ponder what it meant for him to be a Christian in the Protestant tradition.
He shares how wrestling with that, and reflecting on Christ's prayer for unity among His followers, put him on a path toward the Catholic Church.

    I love hearing you guys talk about your Christian walk. I was a cradle Catholic but left the Church when I met my wife and started going to southern Baptist and Pentecostal churches. I was poorly catechized in the 70’s and when I started going to church with my wife I became ‘on-fire’ for the Lord. But,as I started learning everything pointed me back to the Catholic Church. At Easter Mass 2018 I came home and my wife, being a hardcore fundamentalist was not and still is not happy… she was raised to dislike Catholics and it makes me think of Fulton Sheens quote that (paraphrasing) that there aren’t 100 Americans who hate the Catholic Church, but they’re millions who hate what they think it is.

    In 1626, the decision of the Diet of Speyer was that every prince should hold whichever religious beliefs he could justify before his King and God. Three years later, the Diet held in that same place revoked the earlier decision. Six German princes (nobles) created a letter of protest. King Ferdinand refused to accept it so, instead of it being read out, it was printed and made public. The English term, “protestant” was coined to refer to those German princes and was later applied to everyone who believed (and believes) that no one is bound by secular authority in matters of faith. Pope Francis has made a distinction between certain kinds of sin and “crimes” - which I understand to mean that he agrees it is inappropriate for civil governments to enforce religious requirements or prohibitions. Many people who consider themselves “Catholic” are aware that the statement by Pope Francis is antithetical to the traditional doctrines of the Roman Church. If you rejected the principle of religious liberty behind the protest of the princes, you were never protestant in the first place.

      Small correction, 1526, not 1626. The 2nd diet of Speyer was in 1529. The 'protest' was on April 19th 1529. But youre right. The term protestant had nothing to do with disagreeing with catholic doctrine.

    • @rogermetzger7335
      @rogermetzger7335 День назад

      @@ContendingEarnestly Thanks for correcting the date. The question remains as to whether it was a doctrine of the Roman Church in the sixteenth century that civil governments were obligated to promote ostensibly Christian doctrines and practices and enforce ostensibly Christian prohibitions.

      @@rogermetzger7335 Are you referring to the decisions of the first diet of Speyer?

    • @rogermetzger7335
      @rogermetzger7335 17 часов назад

      @@ContendingEarnestly No. I think it was assumed by everyday concerned at the first diet of Speyer that permission for each “prince” (noble) to hold whatever religious beliefs and practice whatever religious ceremonies he could “justify before his King and God” assumed that the peasants who lived on his land would follow the lead of their landlord/employer. At that point in time, I think even the people who were inclined to agree with the reforms proposed by Luther (the protest of the princes had not yet occurred) were still of the opinion that the nobility were capable of making such decisions but that the mostly-illiterate peasants weren’t capable of making those decisions, even for themselves or their families. The decision of the second diet of Speyer to revoke the decision of the previous diet was understood, I think, in the context of the assumption that civil governments were obligated to promote the religious beliefs and practices of the majority of the people in the so-called Holy Roman Empire and to enforce the prohibitions of the Roman Church, not only with regard to actions but also with regard to “heresy”. The six princes who signed the protest to submit to the second diet of Speyer were aware that the penalty for doing so could be excommunication or burning at the stake. To people living in mostly protestant (or mostly atheist/agnostic) lands in the twenty-first century, excommunication means not much more than that the person is thereby barred from partaking of the “elements” of the Euchurist. In the sixteenth century, it meant that people loyal to the Roman Church (even close friends and relatives) were prohibited from “communicating” with the “heretic” and prohibited from buying anything from or selling anything to that person. If the person owned real estate (even a modest house), that was usually confiscated and the “heretic” was prohibited from eating the crops he himself had planted. In theory, an excommunicated person could escape to a country not dominated by the Roman Church. Because escape was virtually impossible for people with few friends and few financial resources, excommunication was very nearly as much of a death sentence as a sentence of execution for “heresy”. In this context, I think it is important to point out that most “protestants” continued, for the rest of the sixteenth century, to assume that “protestant” governments should promote protestant doctrines and practices and enforce protestant prohibitions. In the seventeenth century, the way the puritans in New England treated Anglicans, the way the Anglicans in the southern colonies treated the puritans and the way both groups treated baptists and quakers was deplorable. “Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive.” - C. S. Lewis Religion is the sum of those beliefs, practices and prohibitions that pertain to a person’s concept of the highest powers of the universe In the twenty-first century, people who worship Mother Earth operate on the principle that their religion isn’t theistic and therefore sould be exempt from prohibitions against government promotion of religion and government enforcement of religious prohibitions. Even if (or to the extent that) I agree with them that climate change is (partly?) due to excessive use of fossil fuels, I disagree with their use of government to promote their religious beliefs and I disagree with their use of government to impose their religious prohibitions on everyone else for our own good.

Then in AD73, just a few years after the temple became destroyed, the house became desolate, fulfilling Matthew 23:36, 38. It was not until after the house became desolate, the church became universal. The Gentiles were never a part of the judgment of the 12 tribes of Israel. The word catholic was not first used until late 1st century. The word catholic today, is referring to the institution, not the universal church today. I just started watching the series. I converted to Catholicism at age 63. But I had studied it back at age 20ish. It was my dad's explanation of leaving the Church that had a profound impact on my Protestant beliefs. Mom was divorced when they married so he couldn't receive the Eucharist. He made it sound as if Church didn't accept anyone divorced. Dad hurt over this and I saw no need to explore my beliefs. I did some studying on Catholicism after high school but I didn't go through with it. I felt I was a Christian in the Presbyterian Church. That all changed in 2019 when they made it public that they supported abortion. That left me to start finding what the Church in the Bible believed and seek that church. I still believed the Catholic Church was wrong for rejecting my parents. Then some post on social media changed all that. It made me study Catholicism. The doctrines that I disagreed with was all refuted from googling. Then the one verse in the bible that all Protestants don't want to see, 1 Timothy 3:15. How can I still believe sola scriptura when the bible says the Church is the pillar and bulwark of truth? I had to convert although I wanted to do more studying to make sure. I never heard of Scott Hahn but I learned about him quickly. Converted from the same denomination as me. He was a teaching elder and I was a ruling elder. His book Rome Sweet Home led to to read the early church fathers. The rest is history

    My family is from eastern Idaho also. I returned from my mission in 1977, and had nothing but questions. To comment regarding my mission. I did not attend church much before my mission, and knew little about the mormon church. I studied on my mission and it became apparent that this was fictitious. It seemed to me it was Lucifer's plan in plain site, with obedience being the first principle, and keys signs and tokens! I served out the two years, but never came home, as my parents stopped communicating with me on my mission. I just pointed to a place on the map, and chose that point to come home. While my missionary friends were going to college I was peeling logs in Santa Fe, in my 3 piece Swedish knit suit. I bounced around for a few years, and as I got older, and tried to attend, I was told by bishops they didn't like my type, and not to return. I eventually married and returned 14 yeas later with my wife and child, in hopes of some sort of family ties. I lived downtown SlC and would have cocktails on my front porch. A few neighbors didn't agree with my lifestyle, and tore me from my porch. It was evening, and all I recall is my frantic 10 year old daughter leading me home. I had noting on but my underpants. I was beaten kicked to where my clothes were torn from my body. I had suffered several cracked ribs, and a punctured lung. My left nostril was ripped clean away from my nose. Mormons have the ability to be evil while thinking they are doing good! There is nothing like the unanimity of the open road, to demonstrate the character of people. While driving in SLC I get flipped off more in one week, than 21 years in Florida! What is more important to my relatives, is are you with the church? Not how are you doing, are you active or not? Because every member a missionary, they punch their obligatory ticket and check off that you are fine on their list of things to do. They love to lay blame that all my troubles stem from my lack of being with the church. Not the fact that many members have actually put obstacles up in my path. I will not bend, I will not break. Ask mormons if they are racist, and they will say no. But they will deny the doctrine of Ham, that Ham was cursed with a dark skin. Also the lamentites were cursed with their skin color too!

    I had some wonderful friends who found me a little copy of the King James Deuterocanonicals, when I first became a Catholic.

    *God and His Words are antiRomanreligion and antiRCdoctrines.* 1. Catholics say Mary was forever virgin. Yet Bible says Jesus had brothers and sisters. Mary was not perpetually virgin. Mk 6:3, Mat 13:55, Mat 27:56, Mar 6:3, Mar 15:40, Mar 15:47. 2. Catholics say clergies must be celibate. Yet BIBLE says Peter (supposed R Church first leader) had mother in law. Bible says celibacy is not a qualification for clergies. Mat 8:14-15, Mar 1:30-31, Luk 4:38-39. 3. Catholics say Mary was sinless. But Bible says Mary offered a sinner's offering. She was a sinner. Bible says Mary needed a Saviour. Lk 2:23-24, Lev 12:6-8, Rom 3:10. 4. Catholics say confess to R priests in a box. BIBLE says nothing about confessing to priests in a box. Bible says confess to God only. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6, Romans 10:9-10. 5. Catholics say drink of the physical blood of Jesus. Yet OT and NT both say do not drink blood. Acts 15, Lev 7:26. 6. Catholics say pray to passed on Mary and "saints". Yet Bible says do not contact the dead. NT Church did not record a single case of NT believers asking passed on saints to pray for them. Deut 18:11, Isaiah 8:19. 7. Catholics make and bow down to statues. Bible says do not bow down to graven images (statues). Deut 4, Exo 20:4-5. 8. Catholics sprinkles “holy water”. But NT Church of the Bible mentioned nothing about “holy water”. There was no record of any Apostles sprinkling “holy water” on believers. Catholics claimed “holy water” came from OT. Yet Num 5:17 says “holy water” was water used to test adulterous women in OT temple. Hardly the same. Those were for Old Covenant Jews. Not New Testament Christians. 9. Catholics say Peter was pope - bishop of all bishops. Yet Bible says Peter was just a leader of the Jerusalem Church. Bible says nothing of the office of bishop of bishops. Gal 2:9, Mat 16:18. 10. Catholics say there is a seat of Peter. Yet BIBLE says nothing about it. Jesus said “not to lord over others”. 11. Catholics has clergy priesthood. Bible says clergy priesthood was done away with in New Testament. There is no clergy priesthood in NT. Heb 7:27, 9:12, 10:10. 12. Catholics preaches Works Salvation (faith + good works + partake R sacraments + submit to R pontiff + be in R Church + devote to Mary = to be saved). Yet Bible says “believe in Jesus to be saved”. Bible says Works Salvation is cursed. Gal 1:8-9. Acts 16:30-31, John 3:16, Romans 10:9-10. 13. Catholics says they must do Penance to atone for their sins. Yet Bible says repent, confess and sins will be forgiven. Catholic Bible changes the word “repentance” in NT into “penance”. Original Greek NT does not use or mean the word penance. Penance = work to atone for sins. Repentance = change of heart. 1 John 1:9, Mat 6. 14. Catholics say Mary went straight to heaven without dying. Yet Bible says nothing about it. 15. Catholics say Islam and Christianity have the same God. Yet Islam doesn't believe in death and resurrection of Jesus and Trinity.

    Boy satan must be overjoyed seeing the chosen saints return to Babylon but this called the shaking. I pray as you see more and more things happening in the world that the doctrine has taught you, that you wake up! and return to the fold.

    Christianity is not about intellectualism, denominationalism, theology or ecumenism. It's a personal relationship with God through Christ. The Roman Catholic religion and Christianity are two parallel lines that can never meet. The old testament is a shadow of the new testament.

      Brother (or is it Sister) in Christ Jesus established only one line of Christianity its Catholicism. Catholic Christians are the original Bible Christian’s. First thought of as a new sect of the Jews. Then called members of the Way. Then first called Christian’s in Antioch, Acts11:26. It’s in the Bible.

    Obviously staunch 'orthodoxians' will praise and admire the so called 'church fathers', why? because they were influential in the formulation of the doctrines that became the basis of the accpeted 'creeds' of christendom! The Jews had the 'Torah', 'Nevi'im' & 'Kethuvim'. ( the 39 books of the Hebrew bible). By Jesus time the religious leaders had, 'defined more deeply' the inner meaning of the OT! Jesus scolded them "You have made the WORD OF GOD invalid due to your traditions!". The 'church fathers' did exactly the SAME with the NT by combining it with Greek philosophy, a fact admitted by most honest historians! stick to the BIBLE!

    Read your Bible people. Discover the truth on your own. Quit believing what a pastor tells you. Thats what I did. Once I stated studying Gods word, I became a SDA. Catholicism is evil. The harlot spoke about in Revelation 13. Daniel chaper 7 gives us hints who the antichrist is in Daniel’s dream. If you take all the hints, it points to the Papacy.

    This man is being deceived by Satan. The truth is not a feeling! The Bible and history are truth. Catholicism was made up by man, not God. The 4th commandment is part of the commandments, and written in stone written by God with His finger! I urge everyone to read and study their Bibles to find truth. The pope claims to be God. That's blasphemy!!!!
